Musings from the Bunker 6/6/20

Good morning,

All uplifting music and poetry today. Enjoy the weekend!

MUSIC

Thank you, David Lash, for this version of Bruce Springsteen and friends, “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me (Higher and Higher)”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tWOiipIsG4&feature=youtu.be

And for “Everyday People,” with many familiar faces and some great kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g4UWvcZn5U&feature=youtu.be

Here’s a band called “Shelter In Place”? Really? Only in Seattle… https://shelterinplace.bandcamp.com/album/shelter-in-place. My understanding is they were named prior to Covid-19…

POETRY

As Spring is giving way to Summer and we witness the beauties of nature around us, consider this poem from Wordsworth:

I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o’er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company: I gazed – and gazed – but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth

and here’s a silly one…

Strictly Germ-Proof

by Arthur Guiterman (1871-1943)

The Antiseptic Baby and the Prophylactic Pup Were playing in the garden when the Bunny gambolled up; They looked upon the creature with a loathing undisguised; It wasn’t disinfected and it wasn’t sterilised.

They said it was microbic and a hotbed of disease; They steamed it in a vapor of a thousand-odd degrees; They froze it in a freezer that was cold as banished hope And washed it in permanganate with carbolated soap.

In sulphurated hydrogen they steeped its wiggly ears; They trimmed its frisky whiskers with a pair of hard-boiled shears; They donned their rubber mittens and they took it by the hand And ’lected it a member of the Fumigated Band.

There’s not a micrococcus in the garden where they play; They bathe in pure iodoform a dozen times a day; And each imbibes his rations from a hygienic cup — The Bunny and The Baby and The Prophylactic Pup.
